What You Should Know

Purpose of a Website

Most businesses, organizations, groups, people, nonprofits, and governments have a website.
While there are many reasons to create a website, each website is created for a specific purpose. For example, some websites are dedicated to selling products and services, like Amazon. Other websites, like personal websites, showcase an individual's adventures and interests. In fact, there are websites for nearly any purpose imaginable!
While you develop your website, ask yourself:
  • Who will be visiting my website?
  • What will be the purpose of their visit?
  • How does each page help them with the purpose of their visit?
Most people visit a website for one or more of these four purposes:
  1. They need information.
  2. They wish to make a purchase or donation.
  3. They want to be entertained.
  4. They want to be part of a social community
